About

Nonlinear Life is the summer school with a converging sciences approach on engineering themes related to human health, launched in 2017 by the Riga Technical University (RTU), Latvia. This year the summer school reaches its 4th edition and it is organized by the University of Bergamo, Italy and RTU.

Professors from Latvia, The Netherlands, Serbia, Turkey, UK, Italy and the Italian National Research Council (CNR) as well as practitioners from the biomedical sector (firms, laboratories, rehabilitation facilities) will deliver lectures on “Advances in materials for medicine”. In particular, the focus will be on metallic biomaterials; polymeric biomaterials; ceramic biomaterials and coatings; composite materials, nanostructured, engineered tissue and characterization of materials.

Course leader

University of Bergamo (Italy) and Riga Technical University (Latvia)

Target group

The summer school is open to Bachelor, Master and PhD students enrolled in programs related to health (Medicine, Biotechnology, Veterinary, …), engineering (Bioengineering, Health Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, …), chemistry, biology and physics. A good command of the English language is essential.

Course aim

The summer school is designed, through simple and intuitive explanations, to help students deepen their knowledge on the properties and peculiarities of the materials of biomedical devices. Students will gain essential technical skills as well as acquire the most recent developments and future prospects in the field with a multidisciplinary approach from engineers, materials scientists and practitioners from the biomedical sector. Such skills will guide students in Medicine, Veterinary, and other health-related programs in the choices they will make in their careers and will facilitate engineering students who in the future will be faced with the design and construction of new biomedical devices.

The summer school is focused on new developments and properties (physical, microstructural, chemical, functional, mechanical, biocompatibility, resistance to degradation) of metallic, polymeric, ceramic, composite and nanostructured biomaterials.
