PARTIAL-PGMs Summer School will be focused on the process of creating and producing new materials for catalysis that reduce Critical Raw Materials already used, starting from the modelling of the materials to the industrial scale-up, passing through the synthesis of the materials, the characterization, the testing and the evaluation of the environmental impact.

Course aim

Critical Raw Materials (CRMs), in particular Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) are key components in heterogeneous and electrochemical catalysis and are currently used in a variety of industrial applications, including chemical synthesis and energy conversion as well as in automotive emissions control systems. With ever-more stringent environmental regulations in place, industrial providers should balance the need for better catalyst performance and function, with a reduction in the amount of PGMs used.

PARTIAL-PGMs project, funded by the European Commission, is examining how new nanomaterials can be used to substitute effectively CRMs – specifically PGMs – in current applications.

The project brings together rational catalyst design including synthesis, characterization and realistic performance evaluation of the novel materials. The project also delivers multi-scale modelling and large-scale computational simulations, with a strong emphasis on industrially-relevant chemical reactions and emerging technologies, in which PGMs play a pivotal role
