The course lasts three weeks and the teaching takes place in the first half of the summer school. The course provides a historical overview of the development of Nynorsk from Ivar Aasen to today. It addresses the historical and linguistic psychological background of New Norwegian, Ivar Aasen, features of Nynorsk word choice, inflections and syntax, Nynorsk stylistics, the various arguments for Nynorsk, Nynorsk and gender, Nynorsk and late modern society, the position of Nynorsk and breaks in dialect day.
Applicants must meet the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway and have Norwegian competence at the level of completed Norwegian level 2 or equivalent.
The aim of the course is to make the students understand why New Norwegian exists and what role it has played and is playing in Norwegian society. The course does not primarily aim for students to actively learn to write Nynorsk, but it is a goal to make them aware of the special features of word acquisition, formwork and expression in this target form.
