Personal Patterns

This course is part of the International Summer Academy Salzburg 2022.

We will start the course by looking and drawing from Japanese woodblocks, paying special attention to their rhythmic geometric compositions and the flowing patterned kimonos and forms within the prints. In doing this, we will be thinking about how these works influenced artists like Félix Vallotton and Van Gogh, and how, in the present day, artists such as Njideka Akunyili Crosby and Jessie Makinson have used patterns in their work to fully encompass the body and reflect culture.

Target group

Open to anyone interested in fine arts (focus on Etching -including aquatint, sugar lift and chine colle; mono-print, lino, drawing, collage).

Course aim

As a student, you are asked to bring a drawing or a pattern that means something to you personally. It could be a pattern or print from the culture you grew up in or in which you find yourself now. Or it could just be a pattern that you like or that represents how you feel. It might well be that you discover this pattern during your time with us.

We will be working in a hands-on, energetic team environment, with regular group discussions as well as one-on-one learning. Through an experimental approach to printmaking, with the added elements of drawing and collage, we will learn new techniques while exploring the figure and its relationship to pattern.
