Physics and Fundamentals of Planetary Exploration

About

This course offers an immersive experience in planetary science and exploration. Students will have the opportunity to engage directly with leading experts in the field and witness planetary research in action.

Key topics that will be addressed span the fundamental physics of planetary scienceโ€”including gravity and orbital dynamicsโ€”and the methods of planetary exploration, from imaging and spectrometry to seismology. Students will also delve into the evolution of planetary surfaces, with a focus on tectonic, volcanic and cratering processes. Furthermore, in this new proposal, we added a focus on planetary habitability, which has become a โ€œhotโ€ planetary science topic in the recent few years. The course further features presentations on the past, present, and future of planetary exploration, from the historic lunar program Apollo to new missions such as JUICE and Europa Clipper, both of which are currently on their way to the Jupiter system.

Beyond the classroom, students will participate in hands-on practical exercises, including coding and geologic mapping, equipping them with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Course leader

Dr. Adrien Broquet, Prof. Wladimir Neumann, Prof. Jรผrgen Oberst
