Qualitative Research Methods in Health Care

This basic course teaches the participants in 5 days how to start from a research question, conducting a qualitative research and progress to writing a scientific paper in qualitative research. This basic course provides hands-on tools for starting researchers to be able to start up, perform and finish a qualitative study independently and scientifically rigorous.

Experienced qualitative researchers of international repute will lead the course and share their experience in a variety of research projects. Participants are encouraged to bring their own experiences of research, including their questions, doubts and failures.

• Qualitative inquiry: a different paradigm + exercises
• Setting up a qualitative research project + workshop
• Reflections on own research projects in private consultations (optional)
• Data-collection techniques (interviews, focus group discussions and observations) + workshops
• Analyzing qualitative data + workshop
• Appraising quality and reporting + workshop
• Qualitative data analysis using NVivo software

This year, we’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Marta Wanat from the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences - University of Oxford as our international guest lecturer. She will talk about the role of qualitative methods in implementation science.

Target group

The summer school is open to early career researchers, PhD-students, Master students (max 5) and professionals in a field related to health care. Experience in qualitative research is not required.

Course aim

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

explain why and when to use qualitative research
design their own basic qualitative study
show they have basic competencies to set up a qualitative research: from research question to data-collection method
analyse qualitative data
explain the basics of writing and publishing qualitative research studies
assess the quality of a qualitative research paper
use NVivo for qualitative data analysis

Fee info

The tuition fee includes course material, coffee breaks, warm lunch, social activities, farewell dinner and an NVIVO license for the duration of the academic year. It does not include travel or accommodation.
