Raw earth is undoubtedly the oldest and most widespread building material in the world. Constructions made of earth, can be found in any corner of the planet given the accessibility and ductility of the material. Mortars, plasters, floors, load-bearing walls, compressed blocks, are all achievable with the same material although presenting different characteristics depending on the area in which the structures are built. The advantages offered by raw earth are innumerable and all respond to the same common denominator: sustainability. The buildings in raw earth, as well as the construction processes, reflect the harmonious relationship between man and nature that over time has been gradually breaking down.
Pietro Degli Esposti is the founder of the architecture and construction atelier Matierra and regularly organizes and joins practical workshops on earth construction in Europe and he gave lectures and tutoring at different European institutes.
The workshop is open to anyone interested in the subject, regardless of age, provided they are at least 18 years old. Applicants from abroad are welcome, the official language of the activities will be Italian and English.
Theory and practice for the realization of raw earth structures in the design and re-functionalization of the social areas of Cascina Crocetta. The workshop provides the theoretical and technical skills to realize a series of structures with the technique of rammed earth. With a view to a general re- functionalization of the common areas, participants will intervene in two specific social areas [YB2] of Cascina Crocetta. In the porch will be built an outdoor kitchen counter in raw earth that will serve the area of the stone oven, while, around the bonfire hill, raw earth stools and benches will be made. The construction phase will be supported by a series of theoretical lessons and practical tests on raw earth.
