(Re)Discovering the City

About

The 5-day intensive workshop looks at how we can both be inspired by and change our relationship to the city. We will examine artistic strategies like Psychogeography, Situationism, algorithmic walking, GPS, sited dance and performance intervention.

When have you had enough of your own city and when is it time to discover strategies to refresh that relationship? What is a city anyway? The roads, the buildings, the infrastructural engineering are all manifest, but what of the human and non-human lives that course through it, the consciousnesses and energies that give each urban environment its own unique flavour?

The workshop is a means of (re)considering and (re)discovering a city you may know well or not be familiar with. We will address the body through daily Taiji, Qigong and movement practice and the mind through discussions about urban situated art practices.

We will be walking, sharing, tracing, moving, map-making, playing and developing strategies to see the city anew. Through set tasks inspired by the work of artist such as Sophie Calle, Janet Cardiff, Gob Squad, Francis AlΓΏs, Simone Forti and Tehching Hseih, we will be working to find modes of being in, reflecting on and performing the city. Each day, we will be inside for discussions and sharing artistic examples and outside for explorations, research and experimentation
