About

The relation between Islam & Europe animates many political and academic debates. This course will take students on a journey through the Islamo-European landscape. They will be enabled to engage with and to challenge three main narratives of Islam & Europe and to think critically about the relation between race, religion and secularism.

Admission requirements
The participant requires reflective and analytical skills of an academic level and must be willing to learn more about Islam & Europe and have their convictions challenged.

Course aim

Learning objectives
1. Describe the origin and history of Islam in the pre-modern and early modern European context
2. Describe some general theories and basic concepts about religion / and Islam in Europe from a historical perspective
3. Analyze different conceptualizations and borderings of ‘Islam’, ‘Europe’ and their relations with the entanglements of race and religion
4. Explain how the history of Europe and Islam is linked to contemporary debates and developments
