About

The Summer School ArtsIntoSpecEdu2023: Rhythm - Speech - Movement: Applied Arts Interventions in Special Education (07/03–07/23, 2023) is organized by the Department of Early Childhood Education and Educational Design of the Faculty of Humanities, University of The Aegean and will take place in Athens. As it is widely accepted that the integration of the Performing Arts has an emblematic positive effect on people with special educational needs, a wide variety of its forms can contribute to the remarkable cognitive, behavioral and cultural development of people with disabilities. The Summer School (SUM) ArtsIntoSpecEdu2023 aims to offer a high-level curriculum with knowledge and resources at a theoretical and practical level of pivotal importance for participants to understand, deepen, reflect and practice design and the development of corresponding practices in Special Education with an emphasis on the psychomotor activation of the functional abilities of people with disabilities, with proposed interventions through Performing Arts and Sports. The Summer School ArtsIntoSpecEdu2023 utilizes the experience of scientists from the fields of Performing Arts, Special Education and Therapeutic Gymnastics - Physical Education as it includes theoretical and applied courses aimed at strengthening the holistic development and resilience of children with disabilities, which were designed on the basis of fundamental theories of development, in particular theories of motivation and positive psychology, as well as approaches for the unification of RHYTHM-SPEECH-MOVEMENT in Special Education through the Arts. With the common composition of the human body and the voice as well as corresponding functional and expressive tools, axes are highlighted where, with their appropriate utilization, the use of specially selected practices by the participants becomes possible. Participants are expected to function effectively in their educational environments, in their interpersonal relationships, as well as in dealing with more specific personal matters. Through the development of appropriate communication, physical and sociocultural skills, they will be able to use their body and voice fluently, not only for social, but also for professional and academic purposes. In addition, they are expected to expand their knowledge of more specific aspects of Special Education and the Arts through various cultural and academic and educational events.

Course aim

The summer school "ArtsIntoSpecEdu2023" provides participants with the opportunity to develop skills in both didactic planning and mastery approaches through activities designed on the basis of fundamental theories of development and in particular motivational theories, positive psychology and approaches to the unification of the arts. The aim is to strengthen, familiarize and synthesize the artistic creation through art programs with the ultimate aim of creating a positive atmosphere in terms of communication between children and their teachers/caregivers/parents and more mobilization for action and improvements in language and biological level. It is a complete teaching package that employs theory and organises the special knowledge subjects that will be taught, as well as the psychopedagogical theories and teaching methodology that will be used. At the end of each course, participants are expected to be able to function effectively in their educational environments, in their interpersonal relationships, and in dealing with more specific personal matters. Through the development of appropriate communication, physical and sociocultural skills, they will be able to use their body and voice fluently, not only for social purposes but also for professional and academic ones. In addition, they are expected to expand their knowledge of more specific aspects of Special Education and the Arts at various cultural and academic events when they return to their communities. The Summer School aims to create a learning community with intense interaction and an emphasis on practice. Specific expected learning outcomes and corresponding educational activities have been identified for all participants, who can come from different scientific fields (such as Physical Education, Music Science, General and Special Education).
