About

Northern Business School Hamburg - Summer School "Risk Management in the Metropolitan Area of Hamburg"

Hamburg has long been considered the "gateway to the world". In addition to the freedoms and opportunities the world port has to offer, there is also a wide range of risks in a modern metropolis with which authorities and companies as well as residents have to deal. The dependency on critical infrastructures such as subway system, harbour, and electricity supply; the increase of extreme weather conditions; and the potential focus of criminal or even terrorist groups on the city mirror the many challenges. The topic "security" has never been as relevant as it is today. Safety and security has to be more than police protection - many players are needed to guarantee safety within a large city. Besides the ability of single organisations, local authorities, and companies to deal with their own risks, the issue large crisis management is at stake. It is necessary to bring together different players in order to protect the security within the urban area.
The aim of the interactive summer school at NBS is to prepare a simulation of a crisis committee, including police, fire brigade, critical infrastructures, etc. Accordingly, the first phase of the summer school will lay the foundations and the topic will be looked at from different angles. This will be done mainly via short presentations given by agents of local authorities and full time lecturers of the NBS. Additionally, there will be excursions to security-relevant areas of the city. In the second phase, students will be prepared to act as potential participants in a crisis committee. The third and final phase will be to carry out a realistic crisis committee drill.
The summer school focuses on the following topics: security architecture in Germany, risks and critical infrastructures in Hamburg, challenges of disaster control, security within companies, terrorism, and crisis communication.
