Sculptural Headwear – Couture Millinery

About

During the sculptural headwear course, the participants will acquire techniques for moulding and draping headwear and making couture millinery in traditional materials. In addition to innovative and alternative solutions, the course will look into the history, functions and meaning of headwear.
The workshop will introduce, based on the example of the Balenciaga fashion house in Paris, the materials and techniques of handmade millinery in order to popularise the field of millinery design that has become marginal in recent decades. By researching various materials (straws, felt, etc.), the participants will obtain the necessary historical background knowledge to help in maintaining the tradition of wearing innovative couture millinery.

LEARNING OUTCOMES. The participant:

β€’ has an overview of the history of headwear;
β€’ is familiar with contemporary techniques for making couture millinery and is able to discern between suitable materials;
β€’ is able to find suitable means and methods for making designer headwear;
β€’ is able to find interesting and unique formal solutions;
β€’ is able to value the traditions of making and wearing couture millinery.

ASSESSMENT

The sculptural headwear course will end with an assessment – a presentation of works made during the course and a substantive analysis of the work process.

Eia Radosavljevic (BFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2017); Hand & Lock, Couture Tambour Embroidery Certification (2016); Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC (1989-1991 and 1992-1993). Eia is Associate Professor of Fashion Design at the School

Target group

Students of fashion design, scenography and accessory design (or similar fields).
