Smart Transformation in the Energy Sector

About

The fifth edition of Energy Policy Groupโ€™s international summer school will be held in Bucharest between 11-15 July 2022, with a focus on Smart Transformation in the Energy Sector.

The energy sector is undergoing deep changes. These days, maybe more than ever, young professionals who are studying, working or are just interested in the energy field for its interconnections with the economy, society or environment, need a broader understanding of the sectorโ€™s modus operandi. To this purpose, global energy trends and policy making processes have to be addressed in their mutually influencing dynamics and assessed jointly with the energy sectorโ€™s greatest externality: climate change.

The summer school is one of EPGโ€™s flagships learning programs designed for students and professionals at the beginning of their career to offer them an in-depth knowledge about the energy sectorโ€™s fundamentals, a better understanding of the global energy trends, as well as the opportunities and challenges that come along. Consequently, a significant attention is given to decarbonization initiatives with clean technologies at the center of the transition to a less carbon-intensive and sustainable energy system.

The summer school is a 5-day learning program that consists not only of lectures and seminars led by reputed international speakers, but also interactive activities and field trips to a variety of energy assets and facilities. It consequently aims to enhance theoretical knowledge by practical, hands-on experience.

This yearโ€™s edition will take place against the background of the โ€˜Fit-for-55โ€™ Package, which contains a series of legislative proposals to revise EUโ€™s climate and energy policy framework in order to meet the new EU objective of a minimum 55% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030. As a political and economic project, โ€˜Fit for 55โ€™ is a huge undertaking. It introduces a globally unprecedented carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) for pricing imported carbon, it also includes a major overhaul of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) to extend carbon pricing to shipping, aviation, transport, and buildings; accelerate the development of the renewable energy sector and increase energy efficiency; provide social support for the EU citizens affected by the green transition; and speed up the modernisation of the building stock.
