Course aim

The self-image as an environmental interaction can be expressed through photography. Creation of an individual visual language and a personal narrative is central to the course, as is the importance of design in photography. Students focus on exploring and understanding the ways of perceiving ourselves in the surrounding society, especially through a female/feminist gaze. While acquiring knowledge of photographic history, theory and applied techniques, students develop a body of work. They learn to reflect upon their ways of seeing themselves and their social environment. Diversity (demographic, cognitive and experiential) and the notion of the Gaze of the Other will be further central aspects of the course.

The primary emphasis is on experiment, technique and critique, together with extensive visual analysis, feedback and discussions of the students’ work. Experimenting with the medium of photography and its materials opens new horizons and possibilities, which students study and analyse by studying the work of other photographers and visual artists who use this medium.

Students will work on their project using digital and analogue cameras and smartphones. They can also work from photographic archives and found images. Sessions are divided into meetings in the morning and afternoon. In between, students work on their projects. Students’ works are reviewed in group discussions and in one-on-one mentoring sessions.
