Course aim

In the process of practising mixed media, sculpture and spatial installation in a site-specific approach, students are encouraged to work conceptually by adapting political strategies that operate as a hijack towards the relational rather than conditional modes of spatial production. While introducing all forms of flexibility towards imaginative spaces of exchange, students learn to read that a purely abstract form of an object or a neutral space is never 'innocent' but is itself a form of life that plays a decisive role in the inscription in time.

Through the workshop and research, students understand the practice of rearrangements, appropriation, hybridity and other ways of visual abstraction. The 'performative object' can deliver a set of data in any given semiotic field, where every small detail then starts to matter. Thus it will connect to a set of aesthetic experiences, as a part of in-between boundary conditions stemming from both the access of making and that of being made in existing speculative space.

Accompanied by reading groups, city walks and guest lectures, students engage in counter-poetic interplay, while learning and unlearning at the same time takes place as an unrehearsed encounter.

Different strategies of working and communicating enable students to resist and navigate through different spatial and normative demands: either reacting/responding to it or refusing to do so. Such an approach is a way of de-touring where the existing modes of artistic production and knowledge can be rearticulated.
