Summer School 2026: Navigating the Narrative Turn. Historiography, Museology and Social Research

About

Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk and the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences invite applications for the Summer School 2026: Navigating the Narrative Turn. Historiography, Museology and Social Research, which will take place from 13 to 18 September 2026 in Rzucewo.
The application deadline is 21 June 2026. See below for more information

Eighty years after the end of the Second World War, debates on narrative approaches to the past - both in academic scholarship within the humanities and social sciences and in museum practice - are acquiring new significance. The era of the Anthropocene, mass migration, the digital revolution, and the critical reinterpretation of postcolonial heritage confront researchers and memory institutions with methodological and ethical questions that existing analytical frameworks can no longer fully address.
The Summer School programme is structured around two parallel modules conducted in English:
Producing Historical Narratives. Knowledge, Crisis, and Social Contexts
and
Museology in Practice. Museums, Audiences, and Social Research.
Lectures and workshops will be led by distinguished scholars, including the keynote speakers prof. Alexander Etkind from the European University Institute and prof. Aleida Assmann from Universität Konstanz.
Additional sessions and presentations will be delivered by dr Oleksandr Avramchuk, dr Jesi Bennett, dr Katy Bunning, dr Magdalena Lemańczyk, prof. Piotr M. Majewski, prof. Małgorzata Praczyk, prof. Taku Shinohara, dr Jan Szkudliński, and dr Oscar Twizerimana.
The Summer School is intended for doctoral candidates and early-career researchers who have obtained their PhD within the last several years, representing the fields of history, sociology, political science, museology, and related disciplines. Organisers will provide accommodation from 13 to 18 September, full board, and transportation from Gdańsk to the Summer School venue and back. Travel costs to and from Gdańsk are not covered by the organisers. Participation in the Summer School is free of charge.
We warmly invite interested candidates to apply.
