The Å & Ø of Exhibition Making – Thibaut de Ruyter

About

This course is for artists, critics, curators, or anyone interested in learning how exhibitions are produced. By studying the vocabulary and tools that architects use daily in their practice (models, sketches, photographs…), participants gain insight into how exhibitions are created. During the last thirty years, exhibitions have become an independent cultural field: they sometimes host more than a million visitors, generate tourism, or create media scandals. Or they attain legendary status even if hardly seen in their time… But any exhibition organizer today is confronted with a diversity of spaces, economies, and a vast number of participating actors (from electricians to press representatives, graphic designers to volunteer tour guides and, of course, the artists and their works). The course will reveal and discuss the reality of staging exhibitions.

Being at the ADGB Bernau is also a great chance to study an amazing architectural structure up close, to discuss the heritage of Bauhaus teaching (the coming together of artists and architects under one roof), and to learn how to evaluate architecture. But the course is also a criticism of the white cube, an attempt to present another way of mounting exhibitions, a glimpse inside the reality of exhibition spaces. And last but not least—because it’s mostly about creating things with your own hands—on learning by doing. It’s a lot of fun!
