About
The "Protevangelium of James", the "Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew" and the "Nativity of Mary" form the so-called βNativity of Maryβ narratives. They relate the birth and early life of Mary, her marriage with Joseph, her pregnancy and the virginal birth of Jesus with the visit of the midwives. Later incorporated into the Golden Legend and preaching manuals, these narratives exerted considerable influence upon medieval art and literature, especially nourishing Marian cult.
Course aim
The Iscal 2016 provides a precious opportunity to enhance your knowledge on the transmission paths and mechanisms behind the reception of one of the most widespread apocryphal motifs in medieval art and literature. Medieval historians and specialists in medieval art history will conduct the different sessions, allowing students to appreciate the complexity and the richness of the reception of apocryphal narratives in the Middle Ages.
