The EU and Human Rights in a Time of Crisis

About

The summer school is designed to provide students with a critical understanding of the role of the European Union (EU) as a global promoter of human rights. In the aftermath of “Brexit” and further to the election of Donald Trump as US President, the summer school will offer participants the unique opportunity to discuss emerging challenges faced by the EU in the new international politics domain, including migration, humanitarian crises and human rights, neighbourhood policy, and enlargement.

The summer school will explore the development of the protection of human rights in the EU. Participants will analyse relevant CJEU case law, as well as EU legislative and policy measures, and will critically examine the role of human rights’ promotion in EU external relations. All in all, the summer school will interrogate the relationship between the ongoing process of European integration and the development of EU external action to promote international justice.
The Summer School is characterized by a combination teaching strategies to accommodate different kinds of learning styles and personalities, with specific attention to students with disabilities and non-native English speakers, and to promote flexible self-directed learning. Transversal skills, including the ability to critique, analyse and problem-solve, will be fostered through class discussions and debates, within the context of a structured supportive environment.
