The Local Impact of Global Migration

This course combines a general module, which all The Hague Summer School participants will attend, with an elective module focusing on the local impact of global migration. The course is worth 4 ECTS, divided into 1 ECTS for the general module and 3 ECTS for the elective.

Target group

Any student who is interested in migration and how it shapes cities and the world around us.

We expect no prior knowledge for this module, but do require that you have a good command of English (at least CEFR level B2; no official certificate needed). Furthermore, you must have completed at least the first year of a bachelor's course, which you can prove by providing an overview of enrolment or a bachelor's diploma

Course aim

General Module

In this two-week module, students will work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams to address a global challenge. They will examine the issue from personal, cultural, local, and disciplinary perspectives.

Elective Module

In this module we examine the consequences of migration in an urban context. Through examining cultural markers such as images, food, architecture, and other traces of migration, students will analyze how migration shapes cities. The content is enriched by comparisons to other locations, as well as theoretical perspectives and literature discussed in lectures.
Excursions in and around The Hague are included to bring theoretical concepts to life. Guest speakers from diverse backgrounds provide insights into the practical implications and consequences of migration.
