The Mystery of the Mind: Decoding Psychopathology

About

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of mental and emotional disorders found in adults. Students will gain an understanding of the major psychological disorders including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, personality disorders, and more. Students will examine the impact and interaction of biological, psychological, and environmental causes that contribute to mental illness. Issues of gender, race, and culture will also be discussed and evaluated along with recent research in pharmacological and psychological treatments. The course will address contemporary issues in the field such as stigma and the impact of trauma.

Target group

This course is aimed for graduate or undergraduate students with basic psychology knowledge.

Course aim

By the end of the course, students are expected to:
• Understand the major categories of psychological disorders (e.g., anxiety disorders, mood disorders, etc.) as outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and International Classification of Diseases;
• Analyse the multifaceted ethology of mental disorders including biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors;
• Discuss contemporary issues in psychopathology including stigma, trauma, and cultural considerations;
• Critically evaluate psychopathology research and understand its application to clinical practice.
