The acceleration of social interaction modes brought about by social media and AI has transformed both the visual codes used to express power and the public sphere in general. The self-representation of leaders and citizens on TikTok, Instagram, or X, and Trump's tweet-driven politics coexist today with deeply rooted ceremonies such as enthronements and funerals in European monarchies and the papacy. Using a cross-disciplinary methodology (iconology, iconography, media studies, cultural studies, gender studies, social semiotics), this course examines contemporary visual forms and the processes that give rise to them. What do the images and visual motifs that articulate the public sphere convey? How do images convey meaning to us and what cultural diagnosis do they make of our present?
