The Sustainable City: An Integrated Perspective

This summer school approaches the sustainable city from a profoundly interdisciplinary perspective - bridging natural sciences, urban technology and social sciences and humanities. It examines the relationship between the introduction of new types of analysis and new technologies, on the one hand, and social, economic and political dynamics, on the other.

Target group

Postgraduates, PhD students and professionals in urban studies, related fields, science and technology with focus on sustainability.

Course aim

This summer school aims to address the sustainable city from an interdisciplinary perspective. Together we explore how we can transform contemporary cities towards sustainability. The focus is on technology-driven innovation, socioeconomic and political issues, spatial planning and social justice, including from a historical perspective.  

In concrete terms, we focus on specific environmental issues such as water and air quality, energy, circularity and biodiversity, and address them in interdisciplinary seminars and lectures with sociologists, planners, economists, historians, and ecologists. We learn from practitioners in urban sustainability and visit innovative projects in Antwerp to explore how research informs concrete change in the city.

We aim to give participants an opportunity to discuss with and learn from speakers and fellow students from different academic and professional backgrounds.
