The Temple of Asclepius Excavations

About

The temple and the sanctuary around were dedicated to Asklepios Zmidrenus. This name has been known since 1875 when an inscription dedicated to him was discovered in Rome. The inscription is dated in 227 AD and was left by soldiers originating from the city of Philippopolis (modern Plovdiv).

During the excavations, the foundations of the temple were revealed. It has a rectangular plan and an area of about 120 square meters. Coins, ceramics, metal objects, and animal bones were also found. According to the coins, the sanctuary existed from the beginning of the 2nd to the 4th century, when Christianity was accepted in these places.

The discoveries in the sanctuary of Asclepius are extremely important, as many inscriptions originate from this place. The excavations in 1938 lasted only fifteen days and did not explore the entire area. New excavations will reveal many more finds. They will be documented using modern methods. The study of the temple of Asclepius in Thrace will be of extremely great scientific value.
