Using data as creative material in the design process We live in a world shaped by data, from health to mobility to how we work and live. But in many projects data is still used only at the end to check if choices were right. This summer school explores a different stance: using data as a creative source that can spark ideas, expose meaning and help shape direction from the very start. This course builds on the work of Mathias Funk, Janne van Kollenburg, Sander Bogers, Peter Lovei and Renee Noortmann, who developed new ways to bring data and everyday life closer together in design. Instead of focusing purely on technical tools, we look at how small traces of daily routines, personal stories, and lived experiences can be gathered, read and transformed into insight. These insights help reveal what matters to people, what feels relevant in context, and where opportunities for change lie
Rick Knops
Enrolled as an undergraduate student or holder of an undergraduate diploma, including those pursuing advanced studies or professional careers.
Students should have some basic experience with user research, and be curious about understanding people, routines, and environments from different angles. Students should also be comfortable with learning through testing things in context.
An asset is being comfortable with sketching, prototypes or expressing ideas in simple forms is helpful
By the end of the course, the following learning outcomes are expected for students:
β’ Explain what data enabled design is and how data can help shape ideas
β’ Set up simple ways to collect data in real life in a careful and thoughtful way
β’ Find useful insights in both numbers and personal stories
β’ Use short loops to try ideas out, learn from them, and improve them while they are in use
β’ Use what you learn to make better design choices and share your process clearly
