Target group

At PrepClass, prospective international students receive comprehensive information about the wide range of study options at the Film University Babelsberg – from bachelor's to master's degrees.
If you would like to apply for a degree program in directing, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, or production, we will assist you with your application.

We particularly welcome applications from prospective students with a refugee background

Course aim

The three central elements of the application—the letter of motivation, the portfolio, and the visual assignment upon invitation—are the focus of the course. Together with current and former students, the various aspects of the application are reviewed, individual questions are answered, and feedback is provided.

1. Assessing your own path—reflection and analysis

An important part of the PrepClass is reflecting on your own artistic path. Where do I stand with my work? What are my strengths and weaknesses? When is the right time to apply?
Together, we discuss our own work, review it in the group, and exchange ideas. Former students report on their experiences, share their application documents and videos, and answer questions about their studies and career paths.

2. Letter of motivation & portfolio work – creating application documents

A compelling portfolio is the heart of any application. In the area of letters of motivation, we deal with the layout and structure. Using examples, we analyze successful cover letters before the participants write their own drafts and revise them in feedback rounds.
The visual assignment and the application film are also discussed. What are the requirements? Where does creative freedom lie? Together, initial ideas are developed and strategies for implementation are worked out – even with limited resources.

3. Filming exercises – gaining practical experience

In addition to theoretical discussion, the focus is also on practical work.
In two exercises—a documentary and a fictional scene—participants work together in small groups. They are accompanied by current students from the Film University from various disciplines. This gives them practical insight into collaboration in film production
