European Master's Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation

The EMA Programme is one of seven Regional Master’s Programmes organised by the Global Campus of Human Rights. It was created with the support of the European Union and 42 participating universities from all the EU member states.

EMA is both a residential and an exchange programme: the first semester from September 2021 to January 2022 is organised at the Global Campus premises in Venice and the second semester from February to July 2022 takes place in one of the EMA participating universities within the member states of the European Union plus the UK and Switzerland.

Course leader

About 70 academics from the participating universities and experts from international IGOs and NGOs contribute to the EMA teaching programme. In their second semester destinations, students are supervised and supported by the EMA National Directors.

Target group

EMA is open to a maximum of 90 candidates from EU and non-EU countries.

Candidates must meet the following admission requirements:
- Hold a university degree of a high standard in a field relevant to human rights, including disciplines in Law, Social Sciences and Humanities, and must have a minimum of 180 ECTS (Bachelor/General Degree).
- Have certified knowledge of English at least at level B2. Accepted certificates are IELTS (min. score 6), TOEFL (min. 80 for the IBT) and Cambridge exams (min. score 169-175), obtained no more than 3 years before the start of the programme.

Course aim

EMA was established with the following aims:

- To educate high-level professionals in the field of human rights and democratisation qualified to work as academics, staff members or field workers for inter-governmental, governmental, and non-governmental organisations;
- To provide its graduates with both a solid theoretical understanding of issues related to human rights and democratisation and with operational skills enabling them to perform practical work in this area;
- To create and maintain a European network of curriculum development and staff exchange among universities in the field of human rights and democratisation.

Credits info

The academic year of the European Master's Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation (EMA) is divided into the following components:
- First Semester – September to January in Venice, Italy (worth 50% of the total mark, equivalent to 30 ECTS credits)
- Second Semester – February to July in one of the 42 participating universities located throughout the European Union plus the UK and Switzerland (worth 15% of the total mark, equivalent to 9 ECTS credits)
- Thesis – research and thesis submission at one of the participating universities, graduation in September/October in Venice, Italy (worth 35% of the total mark, equivalent to 21 ECTS credits)

Fee info

EUR 5650: The tuition fee for the academic year 2021/2022 is 5650.00€, payable in two instalments.
Tuition fees cover all EMA courses, both in the first and second semester; reading materials for the first semester; tutoring; access to Global Campus' specialised library; lunch on class and exam days; individual access to our e-learning platform; use of available IT facilities (including wireless area and computer room), and the field trip (subject to final budgetary approval).

The tuition fee does not cover accommodation and subsistence, travel costs to and from partner universities and visa expenses.

Scholarships

The Global Campus does not provide full scholarships. Only a very limited number of students may be granted financial support in the form of a partial contribution and/or a full or partial tuition waiver. Deadline: 15 February
