Architectural Design

when 8 August 2021 - 20 August 2021
language English
duration 2 weeks
credits 3 EC
fee EUR 700

The course »Architectural Design« explores architectural concepts through class presentations, on-site visits, and studio practice. Each class examines particular building types, design principles and methodologies, leading to practical design techniques. Spatial strategies will be applied to daily tasks in artistic ways.

Design principles such as open plan, inner courtyard, shifting storeys, and mass and space will be explored and applied to architectural model making and sculpturing by using a variety of materials. We will take a closer look at practical examples and discuss a variety of modern public buildings in Europe, including visits of selected buildings nearby. You will have the opportunity to try out various spatial strategies in practical tasks and develop design approaches for your final project: An art museum in Weimar!

The final design project focuses on the connection between inner and outer spaces, the arrival and opening situation of the building, the spatial links of exhibition spaces, the opening and sight concept, and the use of light.

The course supports the understanding of spatial qualities. The course allows students to explore design strategies in architecture, and it improves each student's personal design competence.

In addition to the class programme, we have prepared a varied social programme for you: Meet participants from all over the world during our gaming night, the international food evening, at a joint free visit to the cinema, on a trip to Berlin or Leipzig or when diving into the vast cultural options that Weimar has to offer.

We look forward to welcoming you!
