The Apocrypha in the Age of Cathedrals
The "Protevangelium of James", the "Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew" and the "Nativity of Mary" form the so-called “Nativity of Mary” narratives. They relate the birth and early life of Mary, her marriage with Joseph, her pregnancy and the virginal birth of Jesus with the visit of the midwives. Later incorporated into the Golden Legend and preaching manuals, these narratives exerted considerable influence upon medieval art and literature, especially nourishing Marian cult.
