About

This module will introduce you to the discipline of film studies by focusing on the main theoretical and technical aspects of filmmaking.

Through lectures, seminars, screenings and excursions, you will learn how to approach and discuss films analytically. You will also acquire an awareness of the history and development of cinema, and of the key concepts that can be used to discuss and write about films.

Some films include graphic depictions of violence.

Course aim

This module aims to:

- Familiarise you with the key elements of film analysis and help you develop an appropriate technical vocabulary to use in class discussions and written assessments.
- Examine the features of major cinematographic genres, such as horror, documentary and drama, and trace the history, development and impact of significant movements including German Expressionism, Soviet cinema, Italian Neorealism and American independent cinema.
