“Creativity is not the monopoly of artists.” This notable claim by Joseph Beuys back in 1979 denotes not only the liberation but also the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary visual arts. Over the past decades, all sorts of collaborations among different artistic disciplines, areas of knowledge and the various stakeholders in society have opened up creative practice to variety and diversity beyond its traditional boundaries. The term ‘art’ no longer designates to the ability of crafting or to material artefacts per se but offers a complex method of approaching different topics and meanings. Accordingly, this course is not only for artists.
We access and apprehend the world by means of our senses, especially sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. Our perception is a complex interplay of more than one sense, of inherent memories and of the process of how we are getting knowledge. Sensory experience can help to unwrap and facilitate a powerful narrativity in a variety of projects that can be brought to and used in many different disciplines. It aims to challenge creativity and fresh input. This sensory approach becomes a tool to unlock (new) research and creative, interdisciplinary endeavours. Everyone can be creative!
Open to all everyone interested
This course emphasises practice-based learning. The classes comprise of lectures, workshops and seminars that include readings and presentations of research, field trips (if possible), as well as time for studio practice to experiment with creativity through the senses. By exploring sensory experiences, learning about a wide range of underlying principles and theories, this course aims to introduce various interpretative strategies (narratives) based on the senses to the students. Drawing on their background the students are invited to identify and use the potential of a sensory approach to conceptualise and create interdisciplinary works.
These acquired skills will be practiced and applied in the course through smaller exercises and in a final outcome for the summer school’s exhibition.
This course aims to allow students to gain an in-depth appreciation and hands-on experience on integrating creativity in their other disciplines
