About

Strong Women: A Journey of Discovery through Literature by and about Women

“The eternal feminine beckons us on,” we read in part two of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s renowned drama Faust. Yet what do things actually look like when we consider womanhood in literature, women writers, and texts about and by women? This course concerns itself with female characterisation in myth and fairy tale, with female characters in literature, as well as with the careers and works of selected female poets.

Readings in the course will include texts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Theodor Fontane, Franziska Gräfin zu Reventlow, Else Lasker-Schüler, Ingeborg Bachmann, and Christa Wolf, among others.
