About

This module will guide students through the drug discovery pipeline, creating a deep understanding of the development process in modern medicine. This includes key concepts such as risk analysis, assessment of efficacy and safety, regulation and clinical trials, and more.

You will learn from academics in the world-renowned King’s Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine, conducting teamwork and scientific research in order to further your knowledge of a topic which has never been of greater importance internationally.

Target group

The King's College London Undergraduate Summer School is open to students who are currently, or have been, enrolled in an undergraduate degree programme. We also welcome applications from professionals who have substantial relevant experience in their chosen subject area.

Course aim

By the end of the module, you should have:

developed the ability to explain the structure of the drug discovery/development pipeline
classified the types of drugs small molecules to biologic / gene therapy
understood how drugs are tested to see if they work (efficacy) and if they are safe (toxicology and safety pharmacology)
developed the ability to explain how the drug are formulated to optimise delivery, explain how clinical trials are conducted and explain the role of the medicines regulator
understood and be able to explain how drugs are monitored once they are in use by the public
