Drugs, Health, Policy and Power

About

The summer school will address a number of important questions at the heart of international drug policy discussions today. Topics that will be covered include the international drug control framework, epidemiology of substance use around the world, consequences of prohibition, human rights, governance and questions of power as well as regulation issues related to illicit and licit psychoactive substances.

The course will include lectures, case studies, interactive discussions, group work and more

Target group

The course is designed for master’s students, Ph.D. candidates, and professionals from all walks of life who are interested in global health, drugs, governance and human rights.
Note: Bachelor’s students may be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis, provided their background and motivation letter demonstrate a strong interest in and/or early experience with the field

Course aim

The main objectives of the Summer School are for students to:

- Acquire a strong understanding of the major health and human rights issues related to psychoactive substance use and related policies, and what are the powers that drive them;
- Become familiar with and gain insight into the functioning and implications of the international drug control system and its intersection with public health and human rights ;
- Understand the power dynamics of current issues related to substances in our societies (ex: the opiates overdose epidemics in North America; cannabis regulation models, psychedelics revivals).
- Explore challenges and solutions for coherent governance and drug policy implementation
