About

The summer school on Film History offers an intensive programme built around two carefully selected themes in film history, combining around twenty rare archival screenings in optimal cinema conditions with expert-led lectures and in-depth seminars.
In 2026 the primary focus will be on Global Melodrama, examining how this emotionally charged mode shaped cinema around the world. Alongside close film analysis and scholarly discussion, participants are encouraged to connect theoretical debates with historical contexts. A second theme will be announced in due course

Target group

The summer school is aimed at Master's and PhD students in film and media studies or related disciplines, with a strong interest in film history.

Participants should have a basic knowledge of film history and film theory (BA level)

Course aim

-Deeper knowledge of a specific topic in film history, aligned with the annually changing theme of the summer school.
-Understanding of key film theoretical concepts and debates, and the ability to connect them to the study of cinema
