Humanities Spring Kids: Rome

About

Improve your English while getting to know the marvelous city of Rome — its piazzas with street musicians and mimes, Michelangelo and the Vatican Museums (we visit at nights, when there is a jazz concert in the Cortile della Pigna), its ice cream, Roman forum and Colosseum, pantheon and more. Students have art and theater classes which help them to connect to the ancient city (we perform scenes from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and make postcards of most of the ancient Roman sites which students then send -- in English, of course -- to friends and family). Students also do individual research back at the villa on what we are going to see that day in Rome and then act as tour guides for the rest of the group. In the evenings, after a wonderful 3 course dinner thanks to our Italian cook Paola, students write in their scrolls (or diaries) about what they have seen and done that day. We are a small group just 15 of us between students and staff and we all learn together, both in the classroom and out. Students stay at Vacanze Romane, a beautiful villa outside Rome which is also near a lake with paddleboats where we go for an excursions one afternoon, That evening, we have dinner at the lake. Students experience Rome each day (which can be hot, but we go in the afternoons when the bustling city has begun to cool down) but then come back to the lovely villa and relax, swim in the pool and have traditional Italian meals.

Course leader

Professor Jane Oliensis; all facolty are mother-tongue and trained in the Humanities Spring full-immersion, live- the- English- language method.

Target group

HS Kids Rome is for children 14 to 18 (we sometimes take 13 year olds) interested in art and travel, history and exploration and being part of a small but lively international group. HS Kids Rome is open to any students with a pinch of courage who would like to live the English language for a week and get to know the wonderful city of Rome. Slowly in the relaxed atmosphere of HS, students begin to feel at home both in Rome and in the English language.

Course aim

We want you to be able to express yourself (without worrying too much about mistakes)on many subjects -- both with other students your own age but also with teacher. At HS Kids you will get practise and help especially in conversational English, but you will also get better at reading and at writing in English. And your research at home omn topics about Rome that interest you and then our visits and guided tours (some of which you will conduct yourself) of he Roman forum, Colosseum, Piazza Navona with its ancient Roman origins, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona (ancient Roman origins) Fontana Trevi (it goes back to ancient Rome, too), and the Capitoline Museum with its sparkling golden statue of Marcus Aurelius will all help you to learn a lot about the past and live the English language at the same time.
