Surface-Atmosphere exchange processes play an essential role in a wide range of fields such as numerical weather prediction, climate modeling, glaciology, air pollution assessment and environmental modeling and hydrology. In complex mountainous terrain not only the models need to be adapted to slanting surfaces and inherently non-homogeneous conditions, also many observational techniques require special attention and process understanding must be revisited. InnSAR will provide state-of-the-art knowledge on these topics through lectures, excursions and hands-on student projects with a focus on:
Planetary boundary layer processes in complex terrain
Trace gas and aerosol exchange in mountainous region
Mass and energy fluxes over snow and ice surfaces
The Summer School is organized by the Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics, University of Innsbruck (Austria) and its Center of Climate and Cryosphere
Course leader
M. Rotach (Univ. Innsbruck), Th. Karl (Univ. Innsbruck), G. Kaser (Univ. Innsbruck), M. Graus (Univ. Innsbruck), L. Nicholson (Univ. Innsbruck), I. Stiperski (Univ. Innsbruck), F. Obleitner (Univ. Innsbruck), A. Held (Univ. Bayreuth), J. Pomeroy (Univ.
Target group
This summer school addresses PhDs, post-docs and young researchers working in the fields of atmospheric physics, chemistry or glaciologiy and being interested in advancing their knowledge on surface exchange processes in complex terrain.
Course aim
addresses Surface-Atmosphere Exchange processes over Mountainous Terrain with focus on three particular topics:
Planetary boundary layer processes in complex terrain
Trace gas and aerosol exchange in mountainous region
Mass and energy fluxes over snow and ice surfaces
The course will provide participants the opportunity to deepen realted knowledge through lectures, excursions to field sites and laboratories and student projects based on evaluation of existing data or modeling. Participants will be assigned to one of these focii and a corresponding project, which is shared with a colleague, respectively. Your studies will be supported by at least two instructors per group.
