Interdisciplinary Science for Marine and Coastal Conservation in a Changing World

About

The MAllorca Science School aims to equip researchers in the early stages of their career with the necessary knowledge and research skills to address significant environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable resource management in iconic ecosystems. With the participation of an international team of speakers, the school places special emphasis on interdisciplinary research introducing cutting-edge methodologies. The programme integrates hands-on research with theoretical foundations from various disciplines, including oceanography, marine and coastal ecology, social sciences, and marine governance. Participants will employ state-of-the-art methodologies such as satellite data, tracking systems and artificial intelligence to study complex coastal ecosystems.

The programme consists of three main modules, all including morning scientific lectures and afternoon practical sessions:

Module 1: Coastal Processes and Their Impact on Marine Ecosystems
Module 2: Dynamics of Coastal Ecosystems: Nature, Physics, and Human Interaction
Module 3: Integrative Studies in Marine and Coastal Ecosystems

During a visit to the facilities of IMEDEA, the participants will also attend seminars and hand-on sessions on the applications of AI to the analysis of Big Data and the analysis of seabird populations. Additionally, the course includes an excursion to the iconic Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Cabrera Archipelago, where attendees will observe and study the complexities of interconnected coastal and marine systems across multiple fields of study.

The curriculum is complemented with a session on Science Communication and Evening Seminars covering topics such as proposal writing and scientific career development.

KEY FEATURES:

*Cutting-Edge Interdisciplinary Research* - Directly experience delving into intricate web of interactions in marine and coastal ecosystems, and theoretical concepts of ecology, oceanography, and conservation.

*Transcending Individual Disciplines* - Dive into real-world complexities through hands-on case studies, to understand the complexities of the real world within your field, but also grasping the challenges faced in other areas of knowledge.

*Scientific Leadership for Transformation* - Interact with international scientific leaders at the forefront of various fields of knowledge to foster the natural development of professional relationships. Connect with doctoral peers to nurture the development of innovative, integrated research solutions aimed at preserving marine and coastal ecosystems.
