The environmental protection and sustainable development overreaches from its scientific and engineering base to all parts of modern society. But do all parts of the society really understand what triggers the climate change? Why certain compounds are restricted to use? What happens with the wastewater from your bathroom? This course will answer these (and much more) questions and provide the participants with deeper insight to improve their orientation in the topic
Assoc. Prof. Jaroslav Filip, PhD
At lectures, participants will learn about major pollutants, their sources and properties. Namely, they will gain insight into “common” pollutants in waters, air and soil, as well as “emergent” pollutants (nanoparticles, microplastics, pesticides…). The lectures will basically answer a question “What are the problems”. Complimentary, seminars will be aimed to answer the question “How to solve these problems”. Namely, they will introduce techniques commonly used for the pollution prevention and mitigation, such as wastewater treatment, landfilling and so on. Insight will be provided also into environmental analysis and relation between industry, society and the environment (legislation, restrictions, international agreements…). Students will also attend laboratory workshops where several basic environmental protection engineering techniques such as waste composition determination or water treatment by sorption will be introduced to them
The course will introduce to participants three principal issues of environmental protection engineering, that is: 1) What are the major pollutants, where they come from and what is their effect? 2) How can these pollutants be detected in the environment? and 3) Which methods can be used for pollution prevention/”cleaning”? Besides lectures and seminars, participants will also experience basics of the discussed techniques during laboratory workshops.
The participants will learn about environmental technologies, their importance and applications. At the end, they will be able to work out a model risk assessment of certain anthropogenic activity. This assessment will be prepared by teams of 2-3 students and will prove their ability to work with the information learned during course activities
