Methods of Forensic Analysis

About

This course balances theoretical and practical components, preparing students to leave with a solid introduction to the wide range of forensic analysis. The theoretical part of the course will deal with the explanation of forensic analysis methods prior to the practical analysis of biological samples, fingerprints, toxicological analysis, analysis of heavy metals, analysis of substances in medicines, doping control methods. Theoretical instructions will be used to verify the analysis of substances in the laboratory.

By the end of the course, students will have gained not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills that will prepare them for further studies or careers in forensic science. The course is designed to provide a deep understanding of how forensic methods contribute to solving crimes, ensuring public safety, and upholding the integrity of systems like sports and healthcare.

This programme is designed as a part of our Intensive 2 Week Summer School, where multiple courses from a wide variety of Masaryk University study programmes and departments will be offered. These courses will be arranged in an intensive and dynamic form, each working day there will be an academic session. In the afternoon and evenings students come together from across disciplines to enjoy everything Brno has to offer!

Course aim

In the end of the course, students should be able to:

- Develop proficiency in forensic analysis techniques: Students will acquire practical and theoretical skills in various forensic analysis methods, including biological sample analysis, fingerprint identification, toxicological testing, and doping control. They will learn to apply these methods in laboratory settings, ensuring a thorough understanding of how forensic science contributes to criminal investigations and public safety.
- Understand the legal and ethical implications of forensic science: Students will gain insight into the ethical considerations and legal standards governing the use of forensic evidence in criminal justice systems. This includes the chain of custody, the admissibility of evidence, and the importance of accuracy in forensic analysis to avoid wrongful convictions or miscarriages of justice.
- Apply advanced laboratory techniques in real-world contexts: Through hands-on laboratory verification exercises, students will develop the ability to apply advanced methods such as toxicological screening, and heavy metal analysis to solve real-world forensic problems. They will understand how to interpret results and their significance in various forensic scenarios, such as crime scene investigations, environmental cases, and drug testing.
