About

In this summer school, students will gain a better understanding of the concepts of legal technology and responsible artificial intelligence. More specifically:

Students with no background in computing, will learn the basic principles of programming. Students with no background in law, will learn the basic principles for the legal use of technology.
Next, the course includes a description of how predictive algorithms work and unintentionally may pick up biases, including by reference to several practical examples of the use of predictive algorithms in business, customer and legal services.
On this basis, students will be introduced to the ethical and legal requirements for the responsible use of technology in general, and predictive algorithms in particular.
Professionals active in the field of legal technology and responsible artificial intelligence will provide students with insights from practice.

The summer school ends with a Legal Tech Game. Students who successfully pass this test, will receive a certificate of completion.

Target group

This summer school is primarily designed for master’s students with an interest in law and technology, and does not require any prior legal or technical knowledge. PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and professionals with relevant experience in the field are also welcome to apply.

Course aim

Understanding of the opportunities and the challenges of the use of technology in business, customer and legal services (comprehension).
Ability to explain the basic principles of predictive algorithms and the risks they pose in terms of bias (knowledge).
Understanding of the ethical and legal requirements for the responsible use of technology in business, customer and legal services (comprehension).
Ability to explain the basic principles of responsible artificial intelligence (knowledge).

The tuition fee includes lectures, course materials, coffee breaks, social activities, a welcome lunch on the first day and a closing ceremony on the last day. It does not include accommodation, other meals or travel arrangements.
