Marine Geoscience is the integration of the disciplines of physical geography, geomorphology, geology, geophysics and geobiochemistry. By applying a theoretical and practical approach, students will examine sedimentary and depositional transport processes and morphodynamics in shallow marine and near-coastal waters and formation of resulting submarine landforms. An important element of this interdisciplinary course is ship-based marine geoscientific field studies where students try basic as well as more advanced instrumentation, field measurements and data processing techniques.
Master students
Knowledge:
- Marine geomorphology, marine stratigraphy, marine and nearshore depositional environments, stratigraphy and architecture of
marine landforms, marine and nearshore geomicrobiology, dynamic measurements of water coulmn properties, marine and coastal
sediment coring and surface sampeling techniques, shallow seismic techeniques and sub-bottom imaging, echo sounder
measurements, data processing techniques.
- Ability to assess issues related to the management of marine arears as well being trained in the ability to analyse specific problems
and scientific relations related to dynamics, sedimentary environments, bottom morphology and stratigraphy in the marine
environment.
Skills:
- use research equipment such as seismic devices, eco-sounders, ADCPs, current meters and sediment sample and coring techniques
etc. commonly applied in marine geoscience studies.
- apply basic and advanced data processing techniques for simple analysis of dynamic data.
- evaluate strength and weaknesses of different marine geoscientific techniques and their related uncertainties.
Competences:
- The course is focused on giving the student an overall ability to collect marine geoscience data, be able to sort, ennoble and evaluate
the data into a final result, and use this for drawing meaningful conclusions related to dynamics, sedimentary environments, bottom
morphology and stratigraphy in marine environments.
