Observations and Answers

About

One of the fundamentals of design is observing the world and asking an interesting question. These observations, questions and responses can be created in many different ways.

The aim of this course will be to build observational and reflective skills. Engaging with everyday occurrences and phenomena from science, architecture, and nature and find ways in which these can be utilised, interfered with or mimicked in a design, architectural or sculptural context with the intention of producing installations, sculptures or models.

Through exploring the surroundings of the Bauhaus monument and observing on both the macro and the micro, participants will reflect on what they have seen, felt and experienced. Looking at things from textures, structures, chemical and physical changes to growth decay, cycles, patterns, chance occurrences, interactions, partnerships, and relationships.

The course will undertake a series of hands-on making, drawing, and social workshops. Participants will explore and develop concepts based on observations, creating outcomes in response to them; either from a large part of what has been experienced or merely be using a small element as a catalyst.

Course leader

Craig Barrow (Nottingham, UK, 1990) is a design-based creator of objects, systems, and devices. His body of work takes inspiration from scientific and natural phenomena and processes.

Target group

Best suited for: designers and artists, students and professionals or anyone with good observational skills and an interest in hands-on, three-dimensional exploration of materials and lateral thinking. Basic making skills or understanding of making useful.

Course aim

Throughout these workshops, participants will be noting and reflecting collected observations and developing ideas and concepts towards their final outcomes of the week.
