Raw earth is undoubtedly the oldest and most wide-
spread building material in the world. Constructions made of earth, can be found in any corner of the planet given the accessibility and ductility of the material. Mortars, plasters, floors, load-bearing walls, compressed blocks, are all achievable with the same ma-
terial although presenting different characteristics depending on the area in which the structures are built.
The advantages offered by raw earth are innumerable and all respond to the same common denominator: sustainability.
The tutors:
Pietro Degli Esposti is the founder of the architecture and construction atelier Matierra. Pietro completed his Master of Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of Delft in The Netherlands. In 2017, Pietro worked at SeARCH architecture and planning in Amsterdam. From January 2018 until December 2019, Pietro was part of the team of LEVS architecten where he took part in a wide range of projects and activities focused on African contexts and raw earth constructions.
Nuno Vasconcelos is a freelancer architect, working with existing logistics and streams of waste materials from urban constext, to be used, mainly for raw earth construction. From this practice he started DOING.pt, to develop projects and ideas, focused on the circularity of the resources and waste materials (design, research, logistics, material production, production).
He is now based in Portugal since 2021, after 8 years in Berlin working with Lehmbauwer.de, with special focus to Rammed Earth.

Architects, engineers, students and anyone interested in the topic.
Theory and practice on the use of raw earth for the construction of structures, plastering and finishing of floors as part of the recovery of some areas of Cascina Crocetta. The workshop provides the theoretical and practical skills for the realization of structures with the technique of Pisè or Terra battuta (Rammed earth), the realization of plasters in raw earth and with a view to a
general re-functionalization of some spaces. The construction phase will be supported by a series of theoretical and practical tests on raw earth.
Fee
650 EUR, The participation fee to the workshop is €650 including VAT (including insurance costs). Lessons, accom- modation and board are included in the price, as well as excursions and visits. There is no refund for travel expenses to reach the workshop location.
