The VIU Summer Institute on Ageing offers a âstate-of-the-artâ program which will provide the students with a thorough understanding of the ageing process, ranging from recent advances of the medical and epidemiological literature, to an extensive treatment of the economic dimension (pensions and long term care) and of the sociological dimensions (intergenerational transfers, role of family networks). Special attention is given to the use of large micro-data sets, such as SHARE (Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe) and sister surveys: the HRS, ELSA, TILDA, CHARLS. This edition of the Summer Institute will have a focus on: Global Ageing, Vulnerability and Disability
The Summer Institute will consist of three blocks of activities
1. Morning lectures from leading researchers addressing the most recent advances in the area. Presentations in the fields of biomedicine, geriatrics, genetics, epidemiology, patient care, psychiatry, as well as economics of ageing, pension economics and finance, health economics, public health, demography and sociology.
2 Hands on sessions in the afternoon.
Provide students a thorough presentation of the survey data on ageing available to the scientific community. The 2017 VIU-Summer Institute will focus on datasets such as SHARE, ELSA, TILDA, CHARLS.
3. Poster sessions and revolving conversations
Students are invited to prepare a poster about their ongoing research: a paper they are working on or other preliminary work. Poster sessions will be held typically around lunch-time: students will have the opportunity to discuss their own research with the senior scholars. Students will be asked to take part to dedicated interactive sessions, such as ârevolving conversationsâ, aimed at discussing new research ideas.
Attending the school means developing transversal competences because the approach is multidisciplinary and those who have a specific economic or sociological background will know more about medical advances in ageing research as well as learning the specific language in which MDs deal with these issues.
