The Summer School 2016 provides theatre students and beginning practitioners with diverse, hands-on immersion in the basic principles and practices of dramatic and puppet theatre forms. It is an excellent way for non-Czech speaking students to acquaint themselves with DAMU, especially for those who may be interested in applying to its Erasmus program and/or the M. A. programs in English. University students interested in obtaining credit for the coursework may do so.

The Summer School can also benefit professionals who are looking to diversity their practice. Access to the school`s theatrical and technical facilities (theatre and rehearsal spaces, internet) is included.

The Summer School 2016 will offer two main courses. The first one is organized by the Dep. of Dramatic Theatre and focuses on acting and direction. The second is dedicated to Stage Design and is led by the Dep. of Alternative and Puppet Theatre. The participants will choose one of the two courses and then pick from a wide array of other optional lectures and seminars.

Target group

The Summer School is for non-Czech speaking students to acquaint themselves with DAMU, especially for those who may be interested in applying to its Erasmus program and/or the M. A. programs in English. University students interested in obtaining credit for the coursework may do so.

Course aim

In the mornings the Summer School will offer a four-hour block dedicated to practical workshops and seminars. The block will be divided into two main sections – one organized by the Department of Dramatic Theatre and the other by the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre. Other departments such as the Dep. of Stage Design or the Dep. of Authorial Creation will offer shorter workshops as well. The outcome of these practical workshops will consist of a short, 20-minute performance. The afternoon block will be dedicated to collaboration with the Dep. of Theory and Criticism and other DAMU institutions offering historical and theoretical lectures. The core daily programme of the Summer School will be followed up by visits to select performances followed by analytical seminars, film projections and recordings of past productions; possibly even by thematic excursions and field trips (such as the baroque theatre in Český Krumlov, the museum of puppetry in Pilsen).
