Immerse yourself in the anthropology of cremation: this course offers students in biological anthropology, social anthropology, forensic studies or archeology the opportunity understands the theory and methodology behind cremation studies. Students gain expertise in how to approach cremations and how this applies to different areas of research through holistic studies.
But it’s not only theory! You will step out of the classroom to conduct own cremation experiments, visit crematorium of Brno and try your skills in archaeometric analysis. Students will learn about current research in the anthropology of cremation not only in Czechia, but also beyond its borders!
This programme is designed as a part of our Intensive 2 Week Summer School, where multiple courses from a wide variety of Masaryk University study programmes and departments will be offered. These courses will be arranged in an intensive and dynamic form, each working day there will be an academic session. In the afternoon and evenings students come together from across disciplines to enjoy everything Brno has to offer!
In addition to the academics, daily cultural and social programming will be offered, including the option of a one-day excursion to Vienna.

This course is targeted for bachelor, master and PhD students. The curriculum requires no specific previous knowledge. Students of all fields and degrees are welcome.
Classes take place Monday-Friday (usually) in the mornings. The site visits and learning outside the classroom takes place in the afternoons. Culture/social activities will take place in the afternoons/nights. The course is taught by Dr. Kevin Salesse and Dr. Elżbieta Jaskulska who will discuss the following topics:
Genesis of cremation
Ethnography of modern cremation practices around the world
Fire experience and pyrotechnology
Archaeological and forensic sciences applied to cremation and fire contexts
Anthropology and bioarchaeology of cremation
Thinking cremation beyond ashes
Current research in the anthropology of cremation
Ethics
Activities and practical lessons:
Visit of Brno's crematorium
Outdoor burning experiments
Micro-excavation of cinerary urns
Human osteology
Photogrammetry and 3D modelling
FTIR and RAMAN spectrometry
