Devising Theatre

About

This inspiring and motivating summer school is brought to you by nationally and internationally recognised performance practitioners and teachers. The team of specialists, both individually and collectively, represent a theatre movement
of considerable renown in Scotland, the UK and overseas.

This short course will be suited to you if you are interested in making new theatre that is vibrant, challenging and meaningful in a changing society and industry.

During this one-week intensive experience you will work with the Royal Conservatoire’s specialists in devising performance and other like-minded people to make a short piece of original theatre out of everyday stories and experiences.

In a supportive and open environment you will explore and experiment using contemporary techniques to develop essential performance skills. This creative process will be designed, enacted, developed and delivered by you and your collaborating summer school colleagues.

You will have the opportunity to develop and rehearse your own creative ideas as well as those that are part of a collaborative project and ensemble.

The short course will provide a fun, supportive and challenging environment in which all students, from beginners to advanced, can explore and learn.
The summer school will conclude with an informal presentation of your work to an invited audience.

This will take place on Friday 27 July at 3pm in the Royal Conservatoire’s Chandler Studio Theatre.

A full course outline can be found on our website.

Course leader

Deborah Richardson-Webb Deborah is the Head of Performance Pedagogy and currently teaches on the BA Contemporary Performance Practice course at the Royal Conservatoire. She is an experienced director, devisor, collaborator and teacher.

Target group

This five-day summer school is designed for people aged 17 plus interested in developing skills in devising theatre. It may be useful for anyone wishing to perform at the next level, pursue a pathway to further training or explore a career in this field. Specifically you might be teacher, have your own company, work as a solo artist in the live arts sector, direct or perform in devised, amateur, community or educational theatre or work as freelance drama practitioner for theatre companies or community organisations.

Course aim

The course aims to introduce its students to varied techniques, methodologies, theories and practices involved in devising theatre. The students will also be involved in other pedagogical conventions used within the Contemporary Performance Practice degree programme, such as a ‘daily practice’ of either voice or yoga training.

By the end of this intensive short course, students should have:

• been introduced to a range of techniques useful to the devising process
• developed an appreciation of the creative process and its relationship to a final product
• explored key aspects of contemporary devising processes such as the use of text, movement and the ensemble
• had an opportunity to develop personal creative ideas within a collaborative process
